Swimming Clinic at Ghana

The First International Coaches Clinic held at Africa Organised by  the Swimming Association of Ghana and The National Sports Council and conducted by myself Organised was a “Success” and well also recognized by World Coaches Association and the Other African country. 19 Participants from including the National Coaches four different country has been the Participant and everyone successfully completed the course with great interest. I do appreciate my friend Mr Kwami to help and organize the camp.

Brain Swim

Brain Swim :
Written by: Partha Pratim Majumder, Swimming Coach

Brain Swimming is the use of Optimum Body Movement of Human Body ensuring the least conflict and Maximum comfort Level of Movement Pattern and ensuring the Maximum Distance per stroke.

The concept of Brain Swimming starts from one of the renowned Swimming Researcher Milton A. Nelm of Austrilia. In my last visit in USA for a Coaching Program, I managed to attend one of his seminars and discussed different thought about the future pattern of Swimming. Whatever thought I gathered, including whatever I felt combining both I managed to draw a sketch which is as follows. Remember, this concept is still on experimental stage and may have start implementing by some of the coaches including myself. All this is not a copy of his concept rather then a fusion of our mutual thought which may not be same as his thought.

Before you think of coaching a person need to understand the way Brain function. The Brain function in two ways-

·        CHATTERY : It’s the primary function of the brain or thinking. It’s like when you asked for some work or telling somebody of discussion etc.
·        HOW AM I BRAIN :     It’s like how my body responding or inner feeling or secondary inner thought inside the brain during some work or some thing.

Now understand the term called “STATE”. It is the position of Status of the Body or “How do you Feel”. The factor that determine the “State in the Water” (force works / feeling in the water) are:
1.     Vertical Field
2.     Buoyancy
3.     Shear
4.     Weightless
This factors actually effects our “body metaphor” in the Water. Body Metaphor become a library of resources for response to an environment or physical challenge. Swimmers believe in using various body metaphor or posture which we do on the perception of the feeling we have in the land. But due to all the four variable factor stated above about the “State in the Water” actually shape up to a new dimension (which may be close but not equal to the dimension we feel).

Example: If you ask some swimmer Not to Bend there Knee in the Water while swimming Freestyle you will find the swimmers is actually bending there Knee (thougth a little bit), but in the mind of the swimmers they feel that they are actually not bending their knee.

How to overcome this problem:
·        Make the swimmer feel the “Body Metaphor” considering the “State in the Water”
·        Do it from the early Stage.

WIRING : This is another problem as a coach we are going to face while working with the elite swimmers. Perception is wiring, movement becomes part of your history who are you. This is the reason (i.e. Wiring) why a Elite Swimmer do response badly then a Age Group in the Dead Mans Float to Streamline Drill.

Factors to overcome this two problems:
·        Awareness : Paying attention, allow creation of Individual Body Metaphors.
·        Body Energy
·        Layers
·        Primitive Brains
·        Logical Movements Patterns.

BODY ENERGY
·        A Sense of Life, Awareness.
·         Body Energy in response to need.
·        Enemies are di-angengagement  of tension
·        I healthy, confident organism, energy. Automatically distributes and balances.
·        Also called Tummy Energy.
·        Balanced body energy also facilitates breathing.

LAYERS

Assume that there are three Layer in the water “S”(Top Layer/ Surface”, “V”(Surface to the Body Width” and “C”(Layer bellow that) as Demonstrated bellow:-

                                                        S Layer

                                                           V Layer

                                                            C Layer

·        Are Not Real, but perceived in response to Vertical force while moving.
·        Signature resets nervous system making layer work more responsive (can be burned at “Zero” but not in practical in competitive pools).

Then there are two pattern of Stroke. Which are:-
·        “V” Layer Strokes : F/s & Bk (Your body stay in V zone)
·        Multiple Layer Strokes” : Br & Bf (your body covers all layers)
Swim or Plunge purpose of Layer Images Layer

PRIMITIVE BRAINS

In order for you to be efficient and the highest quality athlete you must be able to manage the part of your brain that is hard wired for us to stay alive. Your primitive brain. Your Primitive Brain controls all of your fight or flight actions. Swimming is not natural for human beings as we are made for dry land and being vertical. When swimming your Primitive Brain doesn't like it and can cause you to shut down and go into survival mode. This mode can include panic (specially when you are the end stage of your race or a competitive stage), you to spoil your swimming stroke pattern, hyperventilation, change of stroke to an inefficient one. This cause a huge impact to your
·        Breathing
·        Stability
1.     Most Important Issue
2.     Breathing, Interface
3.     Stability & Leg and Sarge, which is acquatic rhythm

LOGICAL MOVEMENT PATTERN
·        Scapular Plane Movements
·        Tummy Origins
Scapular Plane                      Head          Movement Pattern

Swimming Movements : Horizontal and Vertical respectively. Extension but not hyperextension this will keep our hand movement comfortable and less resistive.

As per the present stroke pattern the Hyperextension, Pull and Push Underwater Stroke movement is involved. If the movement pattern of both the “V” Layer and “Multiple Layer” Stroke pattern can managed to convert into one single semi-circular movement pattern as described above using our body Rotation/wave to make it a Three Dimension Stroke Pattern We might generate a new comfortable and efficient movement which enable better output resulting a better performance. There are still researches going on the get the stroke pattern closest to the said pattern.

Happy Swimming.
